Ah, The Crispy Fish! This fine food truck, which specializes in British-style fish and chips, opened for business in the Fall of 2015. By early October of that year, they’d moved to their “permanent home” at 2155 Sooke Rd, right beside Corona Foods. My partner...and I found this out via rather humorous means: Basically, we’d just gotten off the ferry after a fun (but short) jaunt to Salt Spring for the much coveted Apple Festival. As we were making our way home we happened to spy The Crispy Fish driving down the highway. In a scene that is likely reminiscent of a silly comedy I said, “The Crispy Fish! Let’s follow it!” And so we did just that like a couple of crazies – followed the food truck all the way to Sooke Road. Once we arrived, the proprietor of The Crispy Fish let us know that while he wasn’t open at the moment the location would serve as his home base. Even now, a few years later, the scenario makes me chuckle because it’s just so ridiculous. Yay for fish and chips! On a more serious note, as far as food trucks go, The Crispy Fish is genuinely good. They feature a limited menu, highlighting cod fish, salmon and chicken strips. In my experience, when an establishment – food truck or otherwise – has such a limited menu, it’s typically a good indicator that they do what they do very well. The Crispy Fish is certainly no exception to this rule. The fish (cod) I’ve had from here was very good. It wasn’t greasy; the batter was crispy; and, perhaps most important, the fish itself was fresh, flavourful and cooked to perfection. Seriously, The Crispy Fish gets the fish to batter ratio right, unlike a lot of establishments I’ve visited over the years. The accompanying fries were also nicely seasoned and home-cut. Since it opened its doors, The Crispy Fish has become something of a fixture in and around the Greater Victoria area and has participated at important events like Colwood Beach Food Fridays, Goldstream Farmers Market and the Saanich Fair. The food truck has even participated at charity events, offering up free food to those less fortunate. In short, it has made quite the splash in a relatively short time. Part of the reason for their popularity, no doubt, has to do with the fine mix of friendly customer service they offer concomitant with superb fish and chips. FOOD: 4/5 SERVICE: 5/5 VALUE: 4/5 RECOMMENDATION: I’ve recently noticed that The Crispy Fish is no longer active on the Victoria Street Food App and that they’ve deactivated their official Facebook page. I sincerely hope that this is not an indication that they’ve closed their doors? If it isn’t, and they’re still active in and around Victoria, then I highly recommend checking them out. The menu is small but executed very well.
