I remember a conversation I had with an aunt of mine a number of months back. We were reflecting on the many trips we’d taken across the Province over the years – the last one of which was in 2009. As part of that discussion,...we talked about restaurants we’d visited with her parents (my grandparents) along the way. A good number of those eateries no longer exist, but a few are still hanging in there. Partly because of nostalgia, I visited one such eatery with my partner – ABC Country Restaurant – a couple of months ago. I mentioned this to my aunt, saying it was OK, and she replied: “Yeah, it’s funny how things aren’t as good as you remember.” I feel that this is a very apt description for Megabite Pizza. After Johnny’s Pizza Factory started a rapid decline in quality, a search was started for a new pizza place. My (former) partner and I eventually tried Megabite Pizza for the first time in 2009 and were quite impressed with the variety of pizza options (hot dog pizza, anyone?), the quality of said pizza, and the price. The sesame seeds sprinkled along the crust was a small but delicious touch. Thus, Megabite became the “go to” delivery option when staying in Vancouver. But it wasn’t just the pizza. Their wings were also of a very decent quality for the price paid. In short, this local pizza chain offered you a good meal without causing you to break the bank – a rarity in Vancouver. Now, it had been a few years since I’d last patronized Megabite and I recently found myself in Vancouver pining for a good, but cheap pizza. “Ah,” I thought, “Megabite!” And so an order was placed for their “Carnivore” pizza and wings. When the food eventually arrived, I was anxious to eat. Was it just as good as I’d remembered? The short answer to that question is “no.” The pizza was still cheap in price and there were ample toppings but, now, it just tasted (and looked) like cheap food court pizza. What happened to nice presentation? What happened to decent presentation? What happened to the sesame seeds on the crust? To be fair, the pizza was okay, but a far cry from what my memory was telling me. Likewise with the wings, too; they were similar to those found in most gas stations. FOOD: 3/5 SERVICE: 4/5 (prompt delivery) VALUE: 3/5 RECOMMENDATION: “It’s funny how things aren’t as good as you remember.” And so it goes. I’m not sure what happened. Maybe it was an off-night? Or maybe I should’ve ordered my old favourite, the hot & sweet? Regardless, I don’t think I’ll be ordering from this establishment again any time soon. The pizza was cheap, but so too was the overall quality. Well, another memory dashed. PS: If you found this review helpful in any way please hit the "helpful" button!More
