BLBF Map Launch at New Taste of Woolwich

BLBF Map Launch at New Taste of Woolwich

A new season of local food is upon us and with it comes a new crop of Buy Local! Buy Fresh! maps and a new Taste of Woolwich event taking place at the Elmira Farmers' Market Saturday, June 17, 9 am -1 pm.

After a decade of supporting local food producers and helping Woolwich residents understand where their food comes from, the event’s move to the market is a natural one. Joy Finney, a Health Promoter at Woolwich Community Health Centre and a founding member of Woolwich Healthy Communities, said, “The market felt like a good fit. Being on a weekend during the day, the market’s accessibility gives people the chance to meet their local farmers and to form the kinds of relationships that help to build community.”

The 11th Annual Taste of Woolwich event is a part of Woolwich Healthy Communities month. Beyond economic benefits, farmers’ markets also offer freshness, variety, and sustainability for the community, which promotes well-being and healthy living. These common values make the Elmira Farmers’ Market a perfect match for what the event has planned.

For 2017, A Taste of Woolwich will feature multiple demos. At 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., The Cooking Ladies will show grilling recipes from their tenth cookbook, “On The Road with The Cooking Ladies, Let’s Get Grilling.” At 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., Amy Sonnenberg, a Registered Holistic Nutritionist from Designed for You Nutrition, will help visitors discover how to make healthy smoothies. The event will also feature fun learning experiences for children and families, with planting, crafts, 4H activities and opportunities to learn about beekeeping and raising hens.

Foodlink Waterloo Region will be on hand to launch the sixteenth edition of the Buy Local! Buy Fresh! map. This free guide helps residents of the Region find fresh, healthy, local food from more than 60 farms, farmers’ markets, and businesses. Be among the first to pick up your free copy of this handy year-round local food guide!

A Taste of Woolwich takes place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 17, 2017 at the Elmira Farmers’ Market, located behind the Woolwich Township office at 24 Church Street West. The event is free of charge.
