Local Food Across Ontario

Local food is a hot topic accross the province of Ontario. Many counties have created their own programs to promote farms and food businesses in their communities.

Many of these initiatives are supported by a collaborative of interested organizations which often include a county Federation of Agriculture (or other farm organization like the National Farmer's Union), local public health units, community futures development corporations, farmers' markets, tourism offices or regional governments.

These initiatives often start with a mapping project or web directory of local producers.  Some have branched out and created regional brands.  Others focus on culinary events and "agri-tainment".

The following list connects to various innitiatives throughout the province.  Find a local food program near you and don't forget to Buy Local! Buy Fresh! all year round.

Guelph Wellington Local Food Initiative

Guelph Wellington Local Food produces an annual Buy Local! Buy Fresh! map. They also coordinate many local events raising consumer awareness about local food including the Local Food Fest, the Wellington Rural Romp one day farm tour and Seeds of Change food tents for various festivals. They are very involved in the development of a fantastic local food network in the region. Contact: Kate Vsetula, project coordinator,(519) 821-5363 Ext. 335
