Based on some of the most commonly-asked questions about our food, Foodlink has compiled Local Food 101 to help you navigate through the confusion that surrounds food and agriculture terminology today.

Cow Calf Operation

Cow-calf operations are in the business of reproducing cattle.  Cows are bred to give birth in the spring so that the calves can take advantage of spring and summer grasses for feed.  The calves remain with the cows over the summer and are usually sent to feedlots in the fall.  Some female calves may be retained by the cow-calf producer to replace older cows in the breeding herd or sold as breeders to other producers.
